The English Medicines Agency has just released the main report on the adoption of dispensing morning-after pill (PDS) without prescription. The report acknowledges that the morning after pill does present some serious problems, such as the appearance of ectopic pregnancy, so it is contraindicated in patients at high risk of ectopic pregnancy (which should be evaluated by a doctor), and the risk thrombosis on repeated administration (which would advise against counter sales, facilitating the abuse). These issues have been silenced by the PDS brochure released by the Ministry of Health, and even said something so outrageous for a product like this, like I had no serious adverse effects and contraindications was free (which is known to be untrue).
But also what I personally observed in this and other reports in this regard is an ideological bias, which often not get used to it. Let me explain: In the security section, reference is made exclusively to security for women. No mention of security for a possible embryo not yet implanted. Muting
completely this aspect, there is an implicit assumption that the embryo is a human being, or is not worthy of consideration for a health professional or health regulatory agency, or to the user, or the population that requires objective and scientifically rigorous. Why? I do not understand. I think a denial ideological, not scientific. From the point of view even stranger to ethical considerations should be included in the section on security, safety for the embryo, both non-implanted and implanted. Some drugs have risks to the embryo, and this is recorded in its data sheet in the security section, but is not in this case.
Moreover, I note that the appearance of ectopic pregnancy is not negligible, is a finding of fact antiimplantatorio-and therefore embryocidal, or early abortion of self-levonorgestrel: uterine pregnancies are prevented by the effect antiimplantatorio, but not the ectopic, which are independent of the decidualization of the endometrium. That is the cause of the occurrence of ectopic pregnancy.
Anyway, I am concerned that this measure, which is known very clearly by numerous epidemiological studies that will not contribute to the reduction of unintended pregnancies, was taken for reasons other than health. That's a prostitution of healthcare and pharmaceutical profession in the service of other interests (political, economic and ideological). Since the adoption of this product, pharmacists we are the useful idiots of the film.
Above all, I worry that this pill is serving as a further step to desensitize the dignity of human life in its prenatal stage.
